IELTS Speaking Part 3, also called the Discussion section, is designed to evaluate a candidate’s ability to discuss abstract and complex ideas in depth. It follows Part 2 (Long Turn) and typically lasts 4–5 minutes. In this section, candidates engage in a conversation with the examiner about themes related to their Part 2 topic. The questions become progressively more challenging, requiring critical thinking, opinion expression, and logical reasoning.
Response (Band 8+):
“Living in big cities offers numerous advantages, such as access to better healthcare, education, and job opportunities. For example, metropolitan areas like London or New York attract professionals with diverse career prospects. However, there are downsides, such as overcrowding, pollution, and high living costs. For instance, traffic congestion in urban areas can significantly affect quality of life. Overall, while the opportunities are unparalleled, the challenges cannot be ignored.”
